David’s Bridal is… interesting.

In Chic, Wedding on March 14, 2010 at 4:41 pm

I took the plunge and decided to make an appointment at the big, bad David’s Bridal. I wouldn’t say I bombed, or found anything of my dreams either. I was in dressing room 32, meaning there were more than 32 dressing rooms. I tried on the dress that is prominently displayed on the front page of their web site. I won’t post a pic since my fiancé reads my site. So ladies, go check it out.  It’s really pretty. And every bride considering D’s Bridal will probably try it on. Does that weird anyone else out? I tried one other dress on that I kinda liked but the material felt like paper. So there. Back to square uno on the thrifty dress search.  I’m in the process of checking out the outlets. Do they carry bridal wear? I’m actually having a hard time finding anything in my area besides David and Co. Definitely feel free to give me genius suggestions.

Exciting News

In Chic on March 3, 2010 at 11:28 am

Hi guys, so lets see what’s been going on in the life of miss v? Well, on one very exciting note, I will soon enough become a Mrs. V. Chris proposed to me on our second year anniversary at a rooftop bar with the beautiful frost tower behind us. We are now in semi-full search of locations, colors and most importantly, how to make our wedding thrifty and of course chic. I’ve been perusing through a few wedding blogs, but am in need of any help I can get here. Any DIY and/or budget suggestions? We’re also thinking about a 1930’s or 1940’s theme. So excited!

Little Red Vespa

In Chic, driving, travel on January 15, 2010 at 7:04 pm

Speaking of thrifty things, I own what may be the most thrifty transportation out there. A little red scooter named Bettie. Now the rain that is pounding at my window does not play so well with scooter ownership, but come spring…. man I’ll be “beep beep-ing” my way through Austin’s streets. The gas runs me about $1 a week when I’m riding it daily and the parking is incredible. I’d reccommend it to anyone not overly worried about helmet hair! Get more info at Vespa’s site if you are interested. And no, that isn’t me looking ever so sophisticated at la playa.

My Thrifty Life: Inspired by Mighty Life List

In Chic, life on November 2, 2009 at 3:55 am

I read mighty girl religiously and have fallen in love with her “mighty list” which lists 100 things she wants to do in her lifetime. I decided to make my own. I hope you make one too!

PS I really have never done any of the things I haven’t crossed off… even climbed a tree or gone camping. Seriously.

100 Things to Do Before I Go:

Build a tree house, plant a tree, have a child,  be a mentor, live without any possessions, spend one day with my eyes closed, give someone hope, record a phenomenon, sleep in a castle, take part in a ceremony, inspire 100 people, make one place besides my own more beautiful, pick my own flowers for my table, own a claw foot bathtub, live near my Mom again, cross America in a convertible, read all of Hemingway and Hesse, get a dog again, develop photos in a darkroom I built, make ice cream, climb a tree, bake bread, go camping, play tennis, learn how to throw a softball, see penguins in real life, sew, play 18 holes or real (not mini) golf…

Try escargot, cross the Canadian border, pick apples from an orchard, make a pie from scratch, go on a cruise, snorkel, visit a tropical island, write a book, curate an art show, roam the hills of ireland, see Japan and visit the Tsukiji Fish Market, own an apartment in paris, photograph the Mayan temples, grow a fruit tree, sell a photograph, see an opera, wander the Uffizi , sing in the rain, see the pope, take communion in Norte Dame, see the Mona Lisa , visit the Gustav Klimt museum in Austria, stand underneath the Sistine Ceiling,  go to Bilbao, see Guernica, take pictures in Cuba, learn how to tie a sari in India, see my grandchildren, be conversational in French and Italian, own a car made before 1969, see a volcano, see a Broadway show, plant tulips, donate regularly to charity, have a honeymoon, go berry picking, publish something, run naked in the rain, checjk out my heritage in Puerto Rico, gamble in Las Vegas, see the top of the empire state building and the statue of liberty, drink out of a coconut, go backpacking in the wilderness, have a martini on a rooftop bar, fix up a fixer-upper, take a vacation with my girl friends, attend a silent retreat, paint a portrait, watch the sunrise from atop a mountain, live a full life free of regret.

Holy Stripes Batman! Express has awesome stripes for a steal!

Striped dress...Pink candy stripesblack and bluePinkie Cardigan

So over the very distant holiday weekend I went to express and made out like a bandit. My friend and I had a coupon for $50 0ff $150 and we found a very large collection of items at 40% off on top of it. When all was added, we saved about 80%. This was quite a feat and I doubt to repeat it ever again, but I will say that express still has great sale items… like these little striped numbers I’ve shown above.

Moka Pot:Thrifty Espresso

So, these little guys brew from 2-6 cups of espresso and all with the coffee in your cupboard. I personally have Ruta Maya coffee that I grind in the morning before brewing. You place water in the bottom part, add finely ground coffee to the little chamber and voila, fresh espresso at your service. I made myself a little iced vanilla latte this morning for $0.25! And I have some espresso chillin’ (ha) in the fridge for tomorrow. Google Moka Pot and a ton of choices will come your way.
